　　In the decimal system， the position of the period or decimal point determines the place value of the digits. For example, the digits in the number 8,796.435 having the following place values:

　　8——thousands’ digit(千位数字)

　　7——hundreds’ digit(百位数字)

　　9——tens’ digit(十位数字)

　　6——ones or units’ digit(个位数字)

　　4——tenths’ digit(十分位数字)

　　3——hundredths’ digit(百分位数字)

　　5——thousandths’ digit(千分位数字)

　　注意：digit是“数字”，即0，1，2，3，4，5，6，7，8，9这十个阿拉伯数字;number是“数”，如898是一个数，由3个digit组成。

　　Scientific Notation(科学计数法)

　　Decimals are expressed as the product of a number with only one digit to the left of the decimal point and a power of 10.

　　例如：0. 0000486可用科学计数法表示为：4. 86 X 10-5

　　8,245,000可用科学计数法表示为：8.245 X 106

　　GRE problems involving decimal numbers sometimes require you to combine these numbers by either multiplying or dividing.

　　(1) Multiplying decimal numbers(小数相乘).

　　The number of decimal place (digits to the right of the decimal point) in a product should be the same as the total number of decimal places in the numbers you multiply. So to multiply decimal numbers quickly：

　　Multiply，but ignore the decimal points

　　Count the total number of decimal places among the numbers you multiplied

　　Include that number of decimal places in your product

　　(2) Dividing decimal numbers(小数相除.

　　When you divide (or compute a fraction)，you can move the decimal point in both numbers by the same number of places either to the left of right without altering the quotient (value of the fraction).

　　1. In a certain two-digit number, the units’ digit is twice the tens’ digit.

　　A The tens’ digit

　　题目的意思是：在某个两位数 (two-digit number)中，个位数字是十位数字的2倍。本题的正确答案是(B)。units’ digit指个位的数字;tens’ digit指十位的数字。个位数字是十位数字的2倍，那么个位数字只可能 是：2，4，6，8;十位数字只可能是：1，2，3，4，否则将无法满足上面关系。

　　2. A printer numbered consecutively the pages of a book, beginning with 1 on the first page. In numbering the pages, he printed a total of 189 digits.

　　A The number of pages in the book

　　B 100

　　题目的意思是：一个打印员为某本书的页码编号，第一页从1 开始。在计算页码时，他共打印了189个数字(digit)。

　　解：本题的正确答案是(B)。“digit”是“数字”的意思，诸如1，2，3等。10和1000分别是两 位数(two-digit number)和三位数(three-digit number)，每个数中分别有两个和三个 “digit”(数字)。该打印员在打印标号时共打印了189个数字，除去9个仅有个位的数 字，还可打印90个两位数字，一共是99页，与100比较，99<100。
